Amra Padatik, an organisation of the children of sex workers in West Bengal, works for the rights and development of the children of sex workers. It is the only organization by and for the children of sex workers. The objective of Amra Padatik is to fight against all kinds of violence meted out to the children of sex workers and to bring about a change in the attitude of the mainstream society towards sex workers’ children and to mobilize their opinion in changing the act.
Since beginning there was social discrimination, injustice and neglect towards children of sex workers and it continued to increase. Service provider often harass them calling them in bad name, with no respect and dignity whereas the children of sex workers can also prove their talent and merit in the society if they get the opportunity and such vivid examples will lead us the direction to change social stereotypes. Keeping in view of these facts, the children decided to take up the matter themselves instead of involving a third party. Even in the ITPA, in the rule 4A it has been mentioned that the sex workers could not spend their hard earned money on children who are above 18 years of age. When the children realized that in the Indian society it was almost impossible to get them settled in life at the age of 18, they decided to create a movement against this law and thus on 31st May, 2006, Amra Padatik was established.
The children have established themselves as artists, sports persons and legal consultant, as well as in various other professions but still the society cannot accept the children of sex workers like any other children of the so called ‘main stream’ society. To prevent these social inequalities and to get the rights we deserve, we have started a periodic and continuous movement.
Currently 1700 members from 20 red light districts are involved with the organization with an objective to organize a social movement to protect human rights and dignity of children of sex workers.
